Theoretically, Lifetime Prevalence is the proportion of individuals within a population who have experienced a specified disease, condition or health event at any time during their lifetime up to the point of assessment. It is a cumulative measure of disease occurrence that reflects the total burden of disease experienced by a population rather than the occurrence of new cases. Lifetime prevalence exists to quantify the long-term occurrence of health conditions, particularly chronic diseases and mental health disorders.
Mathematically, lifetime prevalence is represented as the proportion of individuals reporting a previous or current diagnosis of the condition among the total population surveyed. Because it incorporates all prior cases regardless of when they occurred, lifetime prevalence is a probability bounded between 0 and 1 and is commonly expressed as a percentage. Estimation generally relies on cross-sectional surveys, registries or retrospective data collection.
In practice, lifetime prevalence is estimated using population health surveys, epidemiological studies and disease registries that ascertain whether participants have ever experienced the condition of interest. Health economists use lifetime prevalence to estimate disease burden, project healthcare needs, parameterise decision-analytic models and inform long-term public health planning.

Example
A national health survey includes 12,000 adults. Among respondents, 1,560 report that they have been diagnosed with asthma at some point during their lifetime.
Lifetime Prevalence = 1,560 � 12,000
Lifetime Prevalence = 0.13
Lifetime Prevalence = 13%
This indicates that 13% of adults have experienced asthma at some point during their lifetime.

How does lifetime prevalence differ from point prevalence?
Lifetime prevalence differs from point prevalence in the time frame counted: lifetime prevalence counts everyone who has experienced the condition at any point up to assessment, whether or not they currently have it, while point prevalence counts only those who have the condition at a single specific time. Lifetime prevalence is therefore usually higher, capturing past as well as current cases. So point prevalence reflects the current burden at a moment, and lifetime prevalence reflects the cumulative proportion ever affected, useful for conditions that occur, resolve, or recur over life.

When is lifetime prevalence used?
Lifetime prevalence is used for conditions that may occur at some point in life and may resolve or recur, so that current prevalence would understate how commonly people are affected, such as many mental health conditions, allergies, or episodic illnesses. It conveys the proportion of people who experience the condition at some time, useful for understanding its overall reach in a population. So lifetime prevalence is applied where the cumulative experience of a condition over life is more informative than its presence at a single moment, complementing point prevalence.

What are the limitations of lifetime prevalence?
The limitations of lifetime prevalence include reliance on recall of past occurrence, which can be inaccurate, leading to under- or over-reporting, especially for conditions that are hard to remember or were undiagnosed; difficulty in retrospectively determining whether a past condition met diagnostic criteria; and the influence of survival, since those who died may be missed. These factors can bias estimates. So lifetime prevalence is interpreted with awareness of recall and survival effects, which can distort the true proportion ever affected, making it less precise than measures based on current, directly assessed status.
