Theoretically, Period Prevalence is the proportion of individuals within a population who have a specified disease or health condition at any time during a defined period. It is a measure of disease frequency that combines both existing cases present at the beginning of the period and new cases arising during that interval. Period prevalence exists to quantify the overall burden of disease experienced by a population over a specified timeframe.

Mathematically, period prevalence is represented as the ratio of all individuals who have the disease at any point during the observation period to the average or mid-period population. It is a probability bounded between 0 and 1 and is commonly expressed as a proportion or percentage. Unlike incidence, period prevalence does not distinguish between newly diagnosed and pre-existing cases.

In practice, period prevalence is estimated using healthcare records, disease registries, insurance databases and population health surveys covering a defined interval. Health economists use period prevalence to estimate healthcare utilisation, model disease burden, forecast resource requirements and parameterise decision-analytic and budget impact models.

Example

A health insurer covers an average population of 50,000 individuals during one calendar year. Throughout the year, 2,250 members are recorded as having asthma, including both existing and newly diagnosed cases.

Period Prevalence = 2,250 � 50,000

Period Prevalence = 0.045

Period Prevalence = 4.5%

Therefore, 4.5% of the insured population experienced asthma during the year.
