Theoretically, Point Prevalence is the proportion of individuals within a defined population who have a specified disease or health condition at a single point in time. It is a fundamental epidemiological measure of disease frequency that quantifies the existing burden of disease rather than the occurrence of new cases. Point prevalence exists to describe the current distribution of disease within a population and support healthcare planning and resource allocation.
Mathematically, point prevalence is represented as the ratio of all existing cases at a specified time to the total population at that same time. It is a probability bounded between 0 and 1 and is commonly expressed as a proportion or percentage. Unlike incidence, point prevalence includes both newly diagnosed and pre-existing cases that are present on the measurement date.
In practice, point prevalence is estimated using cross-sectional surveys, disease registries, electronic health records and administrative healthcare databases. Health economists use point prevalence to estimate current disease burden, forecast healthcare utilisation, parameterise decision-analytic models and assess the economic impact of chronic diseases.

A community contains 25,000 residents. On 1 January, 1,125 individuals are living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Point Prevalence = 1,125 � 25,000
Point Prevalence = 0.045
Point Prevalence = 4.5%
Therefore, 4.5% of the population has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on the specified date.
