Health Economics Axiology Ontology (HEAO)

The Health Economics Axiology Ontology (HEAO) describes how health economics turns quantities into values. Health becomes quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) or disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), resources become costs, a future amount becomes a present value and a QALY can be given a money value. HEAO keeps the quantity apart from its valuation and records the weight, method, perspective and context used in each valuation. Discounting is treated as the valuation of time and value of information as the valuation of reducing decision uncertainty. HEAO reuses the classes of the Real Health Economics Ontology (RHEO) and the Outcomes Health Economics Ontology (OHEO), and this is an alpha release for review.

BioPortal is the main public library of biomedical ontologies, run by the National Center for Biomedical Ontology at Stanford University. Publishing there means the ontology is held and versioned outside this site, so researchers, data services and software can find it, browse its terms, download it and link their own work to it.
