Implementations
Excel
Calculate top-down burden
Excel multiplies compatible aggregate expenditure by the disease-attributable fraction.
=AggregateExpenditure*AttributableFraction
Assumptions
Valid attributable fraction
The attributable fraction is supported by evidence relevant to the population expenditure category and period.
Compatible aggregate denominator
Aggregate expenditure covers the same services population jurisdiction and period represented by the attributable fraction.
Worked examples
Top-down attributable expenditure
Aggregate expenditure is £500 million and the supported disease-attributable fraction is 8%. Estimated attributable burden is £40 million.
B_top = 500000000 * 0.08 = 40000000
Common errors
Applying an incompatible attributable fraction
Using a fraction from a different population period or expenditure category can misattribute aggregate spending to the condition.
