| Inputs | Definition | Unit |
|---|---|---|
c_bar_attr | Mean cost attributable to the condition per affected person within the stated boundary | currency per affected person |

Implementations
Excel
Calculate bottom-up burden
Excel multiplies mean attributable cost per affected person by the number of affected people.
=MeanAttributableCost*AffectedPopulation
Assumptions
Representative person-level estimate
The mean attributable cost represents the affected population to which it is extrapolated.
Consistent boundary
The per-person estimate and population count use the same case definition, perspective, jurisdiction and costing period.
Worked examples
Bottom-up annual burden
Mean attributable annual cost is £2,500 per affected person and 40,000 people are affected. Estimated annual population burden is £100 million.
B_bottom = 2500 * 40000 = 100000000
Common errors
Extrapolating a non-representative mean
Applying a sample mean to a population with different severity service use or case definition can materially distort the burden estimate.
