Mathematically, Process Capability is assessed by comparing the spread and location of a process distribution with its specification limits using capability indices. The most widely used measures are Cp, which evaluates potential capability assuming the process is centred, and Cpk, which accounts for both process variation and departure from the target value. These indices are calculated using the process standard deviation and specification limits.

In practice, Process Capability is used to evaluate laboratory performance, pharmaceutical manufacturing, healthcare service delivery and clinical processes.
