Example
A hospital day-surgery unit completes 360 procedures during a 30-day month.
Throughput = 360 � 30
= 12 procedures per day
If the unit has a practical capacity of 15 procedures per day:
Throughput Rate = 12 � 15
= 0.80
Throughput Rate (%) = 80%
The unit therefore operates at an average throughput of 12 procedures per day, representing 80% of its practical capacity.
