Mathematically, Occupancy Rate is represented as the ratio of occupied bed-days to available bed-days over a defined time period. The measure is expressed as a proportion or percentage, enabling comparison of utilisation across hospitals, wards and healthcare systems regardless of their absolute size.
In practice, occupancy rate is calculated using routinely collected hospital administrative data. The numerator consists of the total occupied bed-days during the reporting period, while the denominator equals the number of available beds multiplied by the number of days in the reporting period. Example
A hospital has 250 available beds operating throughout a 30-day month.
Available Bed-Days = 250 ? 30 = 7,500
During the month, 6,375 bed-days are occupied.
Occupancy Rate = 6,375 � 7,500
= 0.85
Occupancy Rate (%) = 85%
The hospital therefore operates at an average occupancy rate of 85% during the reporting period.
