Theoretically, the Utilisation Rate is a quantitative measure that describes the proportion of available resources, services or capacity that is actually used during a specified period. The concept is grounded in capacity utilisation theory and enables assessment of how efficiently healthcare resources are employed relative to their maximum potential availability.
Mathematically, the Utilisation Rate is expressed as the ratio of actual utilisation to available capacity, usually reported as a percentage. The numerator and denominator vary according to the resource being evaluated, such as hospital beds, operating theatres, diagnostic equipment, outpatient appointments or healthcare professionals.
