Theoretically, Disability-Free Life Expectancy (DFLE) Calculation is a demographic and epidemiological method used to estimate the expected number of remaining years that an individual can expect to live free from disability. It combines mortality data from life tables with the prevalence of disability within each age group to partition total life expectancy into years lived with and without disability. The method is based on the Sullivan method and provides a summary measure of population health that integrates both longevity and functional health status.
Mathematically, DFLE is calculated by weighting the person-years lived within each age interval of a life table by the proportion of the population that is free from disability. The resulting disability-free person-years are accumulated across all remaining age intervals and divided by the number of survivors at the starting age to estimate disability-free life expectancy.
In practice, DFLE is estimated using national life tables together with age-specific disability prevalence obtained from health surveys or census data. It is widely applied in population health monitoring, health inequalities research, burden of disease assessment and health policy evaluation to assess whether increases in longevity are accompanied by improvements in healthy functioning.

Example
A life table reports 950,000 person-years lived between ages 65 and 69. Survey data indicate that 20% of individuals in this age group have a disability.
Disability-free person-years are:
950,000 ? (1 ? 0.20) = 760,000
Repeating this calculation across all remaining age groups produces a cumulative total of 1,920,000 disability-free person-years. If 100,000 individuals survive to age 65:
DFLE?? = 1,920,000 / 100,000 = 19.2 years
A person aged 65 is therefore expected to live an average of 19.2 years free from disability.
