Concept

Theoretically, YLD Calculation is the method used to quantify the burden of non-fatal disease by estimating the number of Years Lived with Disability (YLD). It is based on the Global Burden of Disease framework and combines information on disease occurrence with the severity of health loss. YLD calculation exists to measure morbidity in a standardised manner for comparison across diseases, populations and time.

Mathematically, YLD is calculated using either a prevalence-based or incidence-based formulation. The prevalence-based approach multiplies the number of prevalent cases by the disability weight, whereas the incidence-based approach additionally incorporates the average duration of disability. Both methods estimate the equivalent number of healthy life years lost due to non-fatal illness.

In practice, YLD is calculated using epidemiological data from disease registries, surveys or surveillance systems together with disability weights derived from population valuation studies. The resulting estimates are used in burden of disease analyses, Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY) calculations and health policy evaluation.

A disease has:

Using the prevalence-based method:

YLD = 3,200 ? 0.18 = 576

The condition contributes 576 Years Lived with Disability.

Alternatively, if there are 400 incident cases each lasting 4 years with the same disability weight:

Comorbidity complicates matters, since a person with several conditions cannot simply have their separate weights added without exceeding the scale.
